How to make a good compost?

It is necessary to put 2 to 3 centimetres of soil at the bottom of the compost bin. Then, it is essential to alternate layers of 20 centimeters with 2 types of waste:

-Kitchen waste (fruit and vegetable peelings)

-Garden waste (flowers and plants without seeds, dry grass clippings, shredded hedge and shrub residues, bark and wood ashes)

Some waste should be avoided in a composter: meat and fish scraps, sauces, very hard waste such as cabbage cores, glossy magazines and coloured cardboard

The compost bin should be placed in the garden in a semi-shaded area directly on the ground. The compost should not be piled up but stirred regularly

Ready compost is characterised by a homogeneous appearance, a dark colour, a woody smell and a lumpy structure. It is collected in the base of the compost bin through a sliding door.
